On the December 1st the Museum of Ancient Baltic
Jewelry will open!
In ancient times jewelry was used not only to fasten together clothes,
but it was also an indicator of the owner`s social status and ethnicity
belonging.
But how did the people of Riga adorn themselves 800 years ago and earlier?
What does jewelry tell us about the time before the city of Riga?
These were the questions we thought about while making this exhibit
in our small museum. We will share our enthusiasm for the magnificent
jewelry worn in 2th – 12th centuries.
What can this Semigallian neckring, Liv beaded necklace, Latgalian
brooch tell us? Their owners lived here near Daugava more than 1000
years ago…. Was the maiden wearing this ornate Gotlandian necklace
brought here by a Kurzeme Viking following raid or trading voyage?
If they could speak, what stories would this ancient jewelry from Finland,
Prusia and Russia tell?
Is it possible that jewelry not only identified its owner, but also
protected him?
Our aim is not to give answers to all these questions, but to let you
to feel and imagine our distant past… Welcome!
